IPMA Young Crew Global eCollaboration Competition GeCCo 2013 – invitation to national Young Crews

Reported by Branka Dropulić in Croatia

21 April 2013 – The Global eCollaboration Competition (GeCCo), a virtual case study competition organized by IPMA Young Crew, is an event of global extent that was first held in 2012. The 2013 competition will take place on the 25th, 12:00 GMT to the 26th,12:00 GMT in May 2013, when more than 90 project managers from all over the world will gather on-line to compete in distributed teams by solving a case study.

geccoThis year there are already 16 confirmed countries to participate in the competition. Organizers of the event are members of IPMA Young Crews who also work in virtual and intercultural environment to make the project going. This is what makes GeCCo a global event to its full extent. All the information about GeCCo is available at https://sites.google.com/site/ycgecco/home. Check to see if your country is on board!

What is so special about GeCCo? The whole competition is held completely on-line with participants distributed in multinational teams. The teams have 24 hours to solve the case study and to present their strategic solution to a jury. After the jury has chosen the best teams, an award ceremony will also be held on-line.

Here we come to the vital parts of this competition. Firstly, each country has its Local Organizer to whom the participants apply and get all the information needed. During the competition, Keynote Speakers have an important role. They are people with unique skills and knowledge in global project management. Their task is to hold the presentation for the teams during the competition; they are there to help them and answer questions.

After finishing the case study, the GeCCo Jury has an important task to do. Their role is of critical importance to the event and it ensures the validity of the assessment and announces the winning team. Award ceremony is held through live stream the third weekend after the competition.

According to Eleni Tsechelidou, Project Manager, Greece, “GeCCo is an IPMA YC event, unique by nature. To understand it, one should see it as a game, with a twin set of goals: to solve a project management Case and – most significantly – to create teams that can collaborate and offer results. A strict deadline and a precise set of rules are only a part of the challenge, since a 15-member international Jury Team will evaluate the teams with the highest IPMA standards. International teams that need to collaborate virtually need to explore new approaches on team building, delegating tasks, leadership, motivation and communication. The participants of GeCCo are skilled, smart, disciplined, focused project managers with an open mind. But the winners of GeCCo are the ones who can play as a team.”

“Organizing GeCCo means that you prepare a fully virtual project for young, enthusiastic PMs, full of energy,” she added. “You learn, you practice your skills and you expand your network. But for me, the most amazing thing was my team: a group of capable people, who volunteer, offer their time, effort and spirit, because they believe in new, innovative ideas that can help the world go forward! ”

The vision standing behind this project is to improve the global network around all IPMA Young Crews spread around the globe. Furthermore, virtual communication, group dynamics in distributed teams, management of different cultures and time zones are the things that make GeCCo unique. Don’t miss the opportunity to go beyond your limits, share ideas, positive energy and work with young Project Management enthusiasts from all over the world!
