Bob Kimmons, PMI Fellow: 1926 – 2016

Retired project management leader, author and expert passes away in Houston

19 August 2016 – Houston, TX, USA – Robert Lee Kimmons, 90, passed away peacefully in his home in Houston with his wife and daughter by his side the morning of Sunday, August 14, 2016.

160819-pmwj50-bob-kimmon-PHOTOSon of Robert and Harriet Kimmons, Bob was born in Longmont, Colorado on June 23, 1926. He grew up in Brush, Colorado, where he graduated high school. He later enrolled in the U.S. Navy while attending the University of Illinois Champaign Urbana. He graduated and obtained an engineering position with Creole Petroleum Corporation, which took him to Maracaibo, Venezuela, where he met his first wife, Evelyn. From that union he had four children: Ann, Simone, Robert, and Anthony. Life took him around the world and eventually led him to Florence, his wife of 42 years, who stood faithfully by his side.

Bob led a full life, and all that were close to him knew him for his enormous heart, intellect, determination, and his quick wit and amazing sense of humor. He was passionate about his work; not only managing countless projects, but authoring and publishing project management books, as well as industry related articles in professional publications. He received the PMI Fellow award from the Project Management Institute (PMI) in 1999.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger sister Mary. He is survived by his wife, Florence Kimmons; children, Ann (Ramon), Robert (Barbara), Simone (Jack) and Anthony; 13 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren, nieces and nephew, as well as countless friends.

The rosary and visitation will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road, Houston, Texas, to be followed at 2 p.m. by a funeral mass. A graveside ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on August 22, 2016 in Flushing, New York at Mount St. Mary Cemetery.

Editor’s note: Bob Kimmons was a friend and colleague of many years.  He was very knowledgeable about international and global project management, very aware of trends and new developments.  His book Project Management: a Reference for Professionals, published in 1989, was a classic textbook and belongs in every PM’s library.  We met at several international events, including the IPMA’92 world congress in Florence, Italy and the IPMA’94 world congress in Oslo, Norway among others.  We became good friends, communicating frequently for many years. I was honored to receive the PMI Fellow Award with Bob (and Ron Waller) in 1999.  My condolences go out to his wife Florence and their family.  Bob Kimmons will be missed by many in the global project management community.
