This book is an excellent project management guide for design, engineering and construction management professionals and students seeking to learn and master the skills needed to successfully lead design, construction and facilities management projects from conception to occupancy and beyond.

Mr. Birnberg’s work fills an important gap in the development of successful designers and facilities professionals, by providing tools and enhancing the essential skills needed for effective and successful project management.

Overview of Book’s Structure

The book is structured in 13 chapters, each of them providing the specifics for the design industry with perspectives on each project management knowledge area.

The first three chapters provide a guide from the overall project management concepts through the planning and management concepts for project managers and focuses on the quality, capabilities skills and development of the project managers.

Further, the next two chapters focus on the personnel planning and the soft skills a design project manager needs to have or develop.

Chapters 7 through 12 enter in depth into the specifics of the design process, project phases and administration of design contacts. The topics provide a practical guidelines and examples for quality, risk, cost and time management.

The last chapter discusses the development of technology and the tools available to project managers in the design and facility management industry.

Project Management for Designers and Facilities Managers” is a compact and very efficient guide. With my educational and work background, combined with my curiosity, I constantly am on the search for design and construction project management literature and practical experience. I was thrilled to find a book that sums it all and also provides case studies, examples, diagrams, forms and tools.
