Developing Humanistic Relationships in Project Management

Abstract:

Managing people is the main challenge in projects. Project managers should benefit from good human relationship and increase their abilities towards project success. Good management of people can reduce conflicts in work area and increase productivities. “Teamwork” requires high skill managing abilities, and it is earned by increasing skills of managing people participating in the project.

Each member of project comes with different biases, human relation skills, technical experiences and everyday life challenges. Project manager should direct all different members of project with different attitudes and experiences for succession of project.

Developing human relationships is one of the responsibilities of project managers and it requires knowledge and abilities to manage. He/she should be able to learn how to develop and maintain human relationships in project. This paper tries to explore main topics of human relations and skills of human relationships meet by project manager.

1-    Introduction:

Projects can’t be performed in absence of people. It is obvious that people play the critical role in any project. Managing people is the main challenge in projects. People with different attitudes and beliefs participate in project and managing them as a team requires humanistic and psychological knowledge.

Project managers should benefit from good human relationship and increase their abilities towards project success. The ability of project manager in managing people in the project can reduce conflicts in the workplace and cause to better activity and more productivity. Teamwork requires high skill managing abilities, and it is earned by increasing skills of managing people participating in project. Positive human relationships will cause the better, faster and high quality project, as negative human relationships provide conflicts and causes project failure.

2-    Project development and human relationship

Think what is important, either considering people then project, or project then people? No project can exist without people, but really we first think about people or project and its goals?  Project managers think mostly about the project’s goal/s because prosperity is important for project manager.

One of the responsibilities of Project manager is to consider the human forces in project and planning to recognize human factors within the project. Good managing of workers in project will be caused the people think that they are part of project and so will try their best to achieve goal/s of the project. Consider that, once people feel themselves as part of project he/she will do his/her best to meet the goal/s of project.

Ahmad Khodaverdi Darian, PhD is a project engineer, educator and consultant working in Tehran. His experience includes electronic technician and technical manager in the aircraft industry, planning & programming senior specialist, EDP director for civil registration and public organizations, and a management information consultant for public institutions in Iran.  He has published three books and numerous articles, papers and reports on MIS and social program topics.  He also has teaching and consulting experience.  He has a BS in English Language and Literature from Allameh Tabatabai University, Tehran and an MS in Social Sciences from Tehran University, and a PhD in Project Engineering from Bircham International University, USA.  He can be contacted at [email protected].
