2014 FIFA World Cup:

Legacy or lessons learned?

The World Cup is coming. In June 12th, we will be in the moment of the truth, not much else todo, justwait and watch forthe matches.  It is a complex program and does not accept political issues discussion, but issues related to project management. In the various projects of the FIFA World Cup Program, we could talk about arenas construction, urban mobility, airports expansion, etc. However, we address a specific kind of project, arenas construction. From the approach there is a question to be asked: 2014 FIFA World Cup: legacy and lessons learned?

Arenas construction

First of all it would be important to comment about Arena São Paulo and Arena Curitiba being the most late to deliver among twelve world cup arenas in Brazil. In both cases the projects have had problems with costs, schedule, scope and quality.

Following is the main arenas information:

Arena São Paulo

Finish date planned: 2013, December

Finish date actual: 2014, May

Initial budget: R$ 820 millions

Actual cost: R$ 1,15 billions

Arena Curitiba

Finish date planned: 2013, December

Finish date actual: 2014, May

Initial budget: R$ 184 millions

Actual cost: R$ 330 millions
